Comox Valley Kayaks & Canoes is proud to offer a wide variety of lessons in kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP).  We offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses including Kayak Rescues, The Kayak Roll, GIeenland Paddling, Kayaking 101, and more.  CVKC has a highly skilled and experienced team of instructors who are passionate about paddling.  We also offer a range of Paddle Canada courses led by PC-certified instructors.

Kayaking Courses

If you are a paddler or paddler-to-be we have a course to help get you on the water! Our seasoned instructors can get you into a kayak or canoe, or onto a Stand Up Paddleboard and teach you what you need to know to have fun & be safe as you enjoy a whole new perspective on our local environment!

 

 

Kayaking 101

Kayaking 101 is specifically designed for the beginner paddler! You will learn a bit about boats, equipment, and safety before heading out on the water for an introduction to launching & landing and basic strokes.

Please bring: Synthetic clothing (no cotton or jeans, please), water shoes, sunglasses & sunscreen, hat, water & snack.

Location: Comox Valley Kayaks. Tide & weather dependant.

Cost: $65 per person (includes boat & gear rental).  Course requires a minimum of two participants to run.

Senior's Intro to Kayaking

If you have never tried kayaking (or haven't been out paddling in a while) and are interested in exploring the beautiful Courtenay River Estuary from a whole new vantage point, then this is a great way to start your day! Join us for an early morning course where you will learn about boats & equipment, then get out on the water with a certified instructor to learn paddling skills. Cost $60.

Rescues

Join us at the lake to learn how to get yourself back into your kayak and assist others after a capsize. Take this course on its own to increase your confidence & safety on the water, or take it as the first step toward a Paddle Canada Basic Kayak certification.

ITK- Intro to Kayaking

Our certified Paddle Canada instructors will take you out onto the water to learn the skills you need to paddle safely & with finesse!  You will come away from this course a more confident paddler - including knowledge of boats, equipment, and paddling techniques. Graduates of all classes, ITK, Rescues and E&B, will receive Paddle Canada Basic Sea Kayak Skills certification, and a free 2-hour kayak rental from Comox Valley Kayaks & Canoes so you can practice your skills!

E&B - Edging and Bracing

Take your kayak skills to the next level. Paddle Canada certified instructors will review and provide feedback on basic strokes, introduce edging and bracing, and guide you through exercises to increase your paddling effeciency.  Basic navigation and risk assesment & mitigation will also be discussed. Earn your Paddle Canada Basic Sea Kayak Skills certification with completion of this class and the prerequisites.

Sea Kayak Skills: Level 1

Do you have the Basic skills and looking for more? Level 1 is a two-day course that moves participants from flatwater kayaking into the sport of sea kayaking. This course aims to develop the paddlers comfort in slightly rougher waters. There is a strong focus on re-entry techniques as well as the skills required to safely plan and execute a day trip with friends.

Cost:  $280 per person. Includes boat, wetsuit, and gear.

The Kayak Roll (4-part lesson)

Due to pool closures we won't be offering our regular 4-session class but we have added 2 dates where we will offer 1 hour one-on-one rolling sessions.  Call to to book you time slot

Our regular Rolling class will continue in the future: 

This 4-session course is designed to teach the participant the mechanics of rolling a kayak. At the end of the sessions we hope to have you rolling – and although we can't guarantee your roll, you will leave the course with the knowledge & tools to continue working on this dynamic skill. To create a high-quality learning environment and ensure personal attention to participants, class size will be limited (maximum two students per instructor). Wet suits, boats & nose plugs provided for all sessions. To take this course, participants must have a good controlled wet exit, be comfortable staying in the kayak while it is upside down, and competent paddling skills.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are one-on-one lessons where individuals choose the skills they would like to improve.  

Private lesson Pricing: $65 for 1 hour, $110 for 2 hours, $165 for 3 hours

Basic SUP (Stand Up Paddle Boarding)

We are excited to offer introductory lessons for one of the world's fastest growing sports - Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) borrows some techniques from canoe paddling, and is a dynamic sport that engages your core muscles and balance. Beginner boards are wide & stable, and offer a whole new perspective on our beautiful local aquatic environment.  We look forward to getting out on the water with you this summer to teach you about skills, equipment and safety!

Basic Kayaking

New to kayaking? Not sure where to begin? Then this is the course for you! Designed for novice kayakers this course gets you started with forward and basic manuevering strokes, a controlled wet exit, and assisted rescue. You will also learn about kayaks and safety equipment and get a taste of the fun to be had on our local waters. Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills certification can be earned by taking all three classes listed below or a one-day option can be arranged. In addition to Paddle Canada certification, graduates get a free 2-hour kayak rental from Comox Valley Kayaks & Canoes--great for practicing new skills!

Custom Lessons

Please note that we require notice in order to schedule our qualified instructors - please make your request at least one week in advance (or longer for larger groups). We look forward to getting on the water with you!

Custom tours or lessons: (based on 4 or more participants) $79 for two hour lesson, $109 for 3 hours. Call for small group pricing.
